Sweden is a country filled with churches that stand as empty tourist attractions, a country that statistically has only 5% of its population claiming Christ—a statistic recently disputed by an evangelical pastor in Växjö who claims that the current number is truly 2%, with over half that number involved in churches who claim the name of Christ, but teach universalism and not salvation through Christ alone. Sweden is a country that is primarily atheist or agnostic, where the church once had national influence but now is largely ignored.

PWM has the opportunity to send Adam Moody, a graduate of Atlanta Christian College with a BA in Biblical Studies specializing in Missions, to the city of Växjö in the southern part of Sweden. Växjö has a long and rich history dating back to the 12th century when the missionary Sigfrid came to the town to convert the inhabitants to Christianity. Impacted in the 19th century by the great immigration from Sweden to the Americas, Växjö has recovered in the last 100 years to become an important business and cultural center in Southern Sweden. A city of 80,000, Växjö is known for its rich history, business ventures as old as the forestry industry and as new as IT development, as well as for its contribution to academia through its internationally renowned university.

While its landmark church, DomKyrkan, serves as a reminder of its historic Christian past, the university marks its atheistic present. It is this university and its students that Adam has been led to partner with the Student Pastor at Växjö University in evangelizing the campus as the ministry representative of his Swedish sponsoring church, Ulriksbergskyrkan (Evangelical Free Church). Because the university has such a large international population and due to the universal use in business, English is a prominently used language. However as a part of his training to adapt to the Swedish culture and for the purpose of building relationships on the campus, Adam will attend Swedish Language Classes at the university.

Adam will also serve as Worship Leader for Växjö International Christian Fellowship, a newly formed international church with designs to reach out to Växjö University and the city’s diverse international population. In addition to his duties as Worship Leader, Adam will also overseeing the development and implantation of small group ministries with Växjö International Christian Fellowship. Some other exciting opportunities Adam is pursuing to impact the city of Växjö include an invitation to produce and promote a 1 hour weekly Christian radio program on a local secular station, as well as assisting with “Street Church”, a street outreach ministry on Friday nights. Lastly, Adam, as a part of PowerSurge Worship Ministries will be serving as a resource with other churches and missionary endeavors in Sweden and with PWM partners in Europe.

Needed for Project Sweden:
Churches and individuals to join PWM, Ulriksbergskyrkan, Växjö International Christian Fellowship and Adam Moody as:

Prayer Partners

  • For all government regulations and paperwork to be completed for Adam to enter Sweden as a church worker.
  • For the Växjö International Christian Fellowship as they move from once a month meetings to weekly ministry and as Adam establishes the worship and small group ministries.
  • For Ulrikbergskyrkan and Magnus Widholm, Växjö University Campus Pastor, as they develop outreach strategies for the college that will be implemented this September.
  • For the door to continue to open concerning the potential radio program.
  • For Adam’s financial needs to be quickly met.

Financial Partners.
With the high cost of living in Scandinavia, Adam must raise $5,800 per month for ministry and living expenses, a factor that has kept many from serving there. However, the need for specialists like Adam is great! We need churches and individuals to assist us in reaching that need. To contribute to the Sweden Project or join us as a prayer partner, please contact the National Office of PWM.
